Grant Wahl, renowned soccer journalist, dies at age 49 at Qatar World Cup

Renowned soccer journalist Grant Wahl has died, the U.S. Soccer Federation noted Friday. Wahl, 49, was in Qatar covering the World Cup when he handed away.

Wahl’s agent, Tim Scanlan, said that the journalist “appeared to have endured some sort of acute distress in the push home” of the stadium for the duration of the quarterfinal match concerning Argentina and the Netherlands, when the two teams commenced actively playing in extra time. Paramedics ended up identified as to the scene, Scanlan stated, but have been not able to revive him. 

Qatari officials claimed in a statement that Wahl “been given rapid health care treatment method on site, which continued as he was transferred by ambulance to Hamad General Medical center.” The precise cause of dying is not however known. 

Wahl had been tweeting during the match, which was portion of the eighth Earth Cup he had included.    

“The total U.S. soccer family is heartbroken to master that we have missing Grant Wahl,” the U.S. Soccer Federation reported in a statement Friday evening. “Lovers of soccer and journalism of the maximum high-quality realized we could generally count on Grant to produce insightful and entertaining stories about our match, and its major protagonists.”

Wahl spoke about his well being on his Spotify podcast Thursday, indicating that he experienced contracted bronchitis while masking the Planet Cup. 

“I took some time off right here myself,” Wahl instructed listeners. “We had two days off here devoid of video games. Scanlan informed CBS News that Wahl experienced an “intense timetable” although in Qatar.

Ned Selling price, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Section, stated that the agency was in conversation with officials in Qatar. 

“We ended up deeply saddened to understand of the death of Grant Wahl and send out our condolences to his spouse and children, with whom we have been in near communication,” Selling price tweeted. “We are engaged with senior Qatari officials to see to it that his family’s needs are fulfilled as expeditiously as doable.”

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber tweeted: “We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken over the tragic passing of Grant Wahl. He was a sort and caring individual whose enthusiasm for soccer and devotion to journalism had been immeasurable.”

Prior to Saturday’s quarterfinal match involving England and France, FIFA paid out tribute to Wahl on the movie screens of Al Bayt Stadium.

Bouquets and a picture of Wahl have been positioned at what would have been his designated press seat for the match, which was remaining empty.
